This lesson teaches a beginner how to make a Rolling Reese baseline in Ableton Live 12 using only stock devices. 2. What You Will Build
- A two-layer Rolling Reese baseline:
- Movement: tempo-synced LFO on filter (and optional pitch wobble) to create the “rolling” feel.
- Mix-ready processing: EQ Eight, Saturator, Chorus/Ensemble, Compressor (sidechained to kick), Utility width control.
- An 8-bar, 16th-note-style rolling MIDI pattern at 174 BPM.
- Set project tempo to 174 BPM (common DnB tempo).
- Create two MIDI tracks: “Reese - Wavetable” and “Sub - Operator”.
- Create a drum bus or have a kick track available for sidechain reference.
- Making the Reese too loud in the low end: Reese mid/high presence can mask the sub. Keep the low range under control and rely on the mono sub layer for weight.
- Excessive stereo width on sub frequencies: Don’t widen frequencies below ~200 Hz — it breaks mono compatibility. Use Utility on the sub to keep it mono.
- Overusing detune/unison: too many voices or too much detune makes the bass lose definition and eat CPU. Start with 4 voices and modest detune.
- Sidechain too aggressive: if attack/release or threshold are wrong you’ll get pumping that’s unnatural. Aim for 2–6 dB of gain reduction on kick hits.
- Too much saturation: clipping the bass can destroy low end. Saturate for harmonics, then EQ to control low-frequency gain.
- Not tempo-syncing LFOs: unsynced LFOs can sound out of time with DnB. Sync LFOs to 1/16, 1/8 etc.
- Use a dedicated low-pass sub layer: Operator sine for sub and Wavetable for the textured growl gives clarity and control.
- Automate Wavetable’s filter cutoff per 4-bar phrase to evolve the Reese across the track.
- Try mapping Macro knobs in an Instrument Rack: map filter cutoff, saturation drive, and chorus amount to macros for quick performance tweaks.
- For aggressive Reese growl, add small amounts of Frequency Shifter after Saturator (use as subtle detune) or use an additional Wavetable oscillator detuned by a few cents and modulated.
- Use “Scaled” velocity mapping to subtly change the filter or LFO amount by MIDI velocity for expressive rolling fills.
- When resampling to audio to create heavier texture, use Ableton’s Saturator + Beat Repeat + Warp-off rendering to avoid unwanted side artifacts.
- Build a Wavetable Reese with 4 unison voices, two saw oscillators, LP24 filter. Sync LFO to 1/16 and map to Filter Cutoff.

3. Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Preparation
A. Build the Reese sound (Wavetable)
1. Load Wavetable on the “Reese - Wavetable” MIDI track.
2. Oscillators:
- Osc A: select a Saw wave (basic saw or “Basic Saw” / “Analog” wavetable). Unison = 4 voices (or 6 if CPU allows). Detune (Global > Unison Detune) around 0.08–0.15. Pan spread moderate.
- Osc B: enable a second saw or slightly different wavetable (e.g., “Classic” saw). Lower its octave by -1 or leave same octave for thicker mid-growl. Set it to 2–4 unison voices and detune slightly different (0.06–0.12) to create beating.
- Set Osc B level a bit lower than Osc A (gain -2 to -6 dB) so it supports the tone without overpowering.
3. Voicing:
- In Wavetable’s Global/Voices, set Unison Voices to 4–6 and Voicing Mode to Classic or styled for polyphonic Reese—this increases the detuned stack character.
4. Filter:
- Use a Low Pass 24 dB filter (LP24). Set cutoff fairly low to avoid clashing sub (start ~150–300 Hz).
- Raise Resonance slightly (0.8–1.2) for character but not excessive ringing.
5. Movement via LFO:
- In Wavetable’s LFO 1, set Sync to 1/16 or 1/8 (try 1/16 for faster rolling movement). Choose a triangle or saw-up shape for smooth sweeps.
- Drag the LFO target to Filter Cutoff (or use the matrix). Set LFO amount so cutoff opens and closes over the beat (amount ~8–25% depending on cutoff).
- Optional: create a second LFO slower (1/4 or 1/2) mapped to Osc B pitch for subtle pitch wobble on long notes.
6. Amp Envelope:
- ADSR: short attack (0–10 ms), decay medium (150–300 ms), sustain around 70–90% for body, release short (50–120 ms). This keeps notes punchy but sustained.
7. Add slight Noise or Feedback if you want more grit (small amounts only).
8. Effects on the instrument chain (after Wavetable):
- EQ Eight: high-pass at ~30–40 Hz (safety), cut around 2–4 kHz slight if harsh. Boost around 200–400 Hz if you want mid growl.
- Saturator: Saturation type “Analog Clip” or “Soft Sine” with drive ~2–4 dB, dry/wet ~25–40% to add harmonics.
- Chorus/Ensemble: add subtle stereo movement. Chorus rate low, depth low, dry/wet ~15–30%.
- Utility: keep Width wide for mid/high (70–100%) but you’ll mono the sub layer later.
B. Build the Sub layer (Operator)
1. Load Operator on “Sub - Operator”.
2. Oscillator A: set to Sine wave. Octave -2 or -1 depending on the root note (test and tune by ear).
3. Keep Operator monophonic (Voices = 1) and enable Glide if you want portamento for legato.
4. Simple envelope: fast attack, full sustain to keep sub constant.
5. Effects on Sub:
- EQ Eight: Low-pass at ~200–300 Hz to remove any unwanted highs from Operator if using slight harmonics. Optional small boost around 60–100 Hz for weight.
- Utility: set Width = 0% (mono) to ensure the sub sits in center.
6. Sidechain set-up: route kick/sidechain trigger into Compressor on the Sub to duck the sub to the kick (will set exact routing below).
C. Sidechain and Glue
1. On both Reese and Sub tracks, add Compressor (stock) with Sidechain enabled.
- Set Sidechain input to your Kick track or Drum Bus.
- Ratio ~3:1, Attack 1–10 ms, Release fast to medium (50–150 ms). Threshold so you get 2–6 dB of gain reduction on kick hits.
- For the Reese you may set a gentler sidechain than the Sub.
2. On the Reese chain add Multiband Dynamics (optional) to tame any harsh highs/mids after saturation.
3. Final EQ: on a Bass Bus (group the two tracks to a bus), add Glue Compressor lightly (1–2 dB gain reduction), then EQ Eight for final balancing.
D. Create the rolling MIDI pattern
1. On the Reese MIDI clip (8 bars), program a simple root-note pattern that uses 16th notes with varying lengths to create a rolling rhythm:
- Example at 174 BPM: Use a pattern where notes are mainly on 16th divisions with short staccato hits followed by longer notes on downbeats to anchor the phrase.
- A very simple rhythmic idea (textual): | 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a | — place short Reed hits on “1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a” and longer held notes on bar edges to taste.
2. Velocity variation: set alternating velocities (e.g., 100, 80, 110, 70) to create groove. Use the Velocity editor to make subtle rolls.
3. For the Sub MIDI clip, keep it simple: play the root note on the downbeats (e.g., for a 4/4 DnB feel, hold long notes across each bar or half-bar). Ensure sub notes don’t overlap with very short Reese stabs unless that’s intentional.
E. Fine Tuning and Resampling
1. Adjust Wavetable’s filter cutoff and LFO depth while the clip loops — modest changes create big movement.
2. If you want a more aggressive Reese, duplicate the Reese track, detune the copy more, lowpass it and add different effects, then blend.
3. Once satisfied, you can consolidate/render the loop to audio (right-click > Freeze/Flatten or Export Clip) to add further audio effects (Vinyl Distortion, Frequency Shifter, or warp modulation).
